How Can Independent Hotels Improve Direct Bookings?

A direct booking is made with the hotel rather than through an online travel agency. Independent hotels improve that path by making it clear, honest, and measurable.

A direct booking is a reservation the guest makes with the hotel, usually through its website, phone, or email, rather than through an online travel agency. Independent hotels improve direct bookings by making that path understandable and worth using, then checking whether it is actually growing. Listing the hotel on more platforms is not the same task.

In India, many independent and boutique hotels receive a large share of demand through platforms such as their online travel agency partners. Those platforms are a distribution channel, not a failure. The commercial question is whether the hotel’s own path is good enough that a guest who wants to book direct can do it, and whether the hotel knows how many guests take it.

Why the channel mix matters

Commissions are set by contract. They are commonly a percentage of the booking value, and the percentage is not the same for every hotel or every platform. This page will not quote a typical rate, because publishing one would invent a number. What an owner can know is the rate in their own agreement, and what a room nets after it.

Commission is not the only cost of an intermediary. The guest relationship, the cancellation conversation, and the accuracy of photos and policies often sit with the platform’s page. A direct booking puts those back with the hotel. It also asks the hotel to be as clear as the platform was. A vague website does not win that comparison.

Make the direct path usable

A usable direct path answers five questions without a scavenger hunt: what the room is, what the stay costs, what can be cancelled, where the hotel is, and how to finish the booking. If the honest answer to the last question is “call us”, say so, with a number that is answered. Hiding the rate and hoping for a phone lead loses guests who are comparing three hotels in one sitting.

  • Use the same hotel name, address, and phone number on the website and on listings the hotel controls.
  • Show current room photos of the rooms you sell, not a rendering of a renovation that has not happened.
  • State taxes and compulsory fees where you can, so the first price is not a surprise at payment.
  • Write cancellation and check-in rules in plain language.
  • Give the guest a reason to book direct that you can keep: a simpler change policy, a package you control, or breakfast that is actually included.

Measure it, or it is a slogan

Pick a definition and keep it. Direct might mean the hotel’s website, phone, and email, and exclude contracted corporate and group. Or it might include them. Either definition can work. Changing it mid-year creates a success story that is only a recode.

Then track the share of room nights and the share of room revenue, not just the count of reservations. A handful of long-stay direct bookings and a pile of one-night agency bookings tell different stories. If the hotel pays commission, a net figure next to the gross figure keeps the celebration honest.

Past-guest email is useful only where the hotel has permission to write and something specific to say. Buying a list, or writing to people who stayed through a platform and did not agree to hear from the hotel, is a poor substitute for a working website.

What this is not

Improving direct bookings does not mean turning off other channels on a Tuesday to prove a point. Intermediaries still reach guests the hotel’s own site does not. The work is to stop being invisible on the path you own, and to know what that path contributes.

Stayvika’s digital presence work covers the clarity of the hotel’s own pages and listings. Pricing and channel mix sit with the revenue and occupancy work. Neither promises a percentage-point shift in direct share.

Questions hotel owners ask

What is a direct booking?

A direct booking is a reservation the guest makes with the hotel, typically on the hotel’s website, by phone, or by email, rather than through an online travel agency or another intermediary.

Why do independent hotels care about direct bookings?

Intermediaries charge a commission set by contract, often as a percentage of the booking. The percentage varies. A direct booking avoids that commission and gives the hotel a direct relationship with the guest, including the ability to explain policies and handle changes itself.

Should a hotel offer a best-rate guarantee?

Only if the hotel can keep it. A guarantee the front office cannot honor creates a complaint and a trust problem. A clearer total price, easier changes, and a package the hotel actually controls are safer reasons to book direct.
